Religious Intrusive Thoughts

Sometimes called scrupulosity or religious OCD.

Religious intrusive thoughts are unwanted, repetitive, distressing thoughts about sin, blasphemy, damnation, divine punishment, or moral failure. They are extremely common in people raised in high-control religion — and they are highly treatable. They are not a sign that something is wrong with your soul.

What Religious Intrusive Thoughts Often Look Like

  • Intrusive blasphemous thoughts (“I just thought something terrible about God”)
  • Compulsive checking — did I sin? did I pray enough? did I really repent?
  • Fear that you've committed the “unforgivable sin”
  • Intrusive sexual thoughts paired with intense shame
  • Compulsive prayer or ritual to neutralize fearful thoughts
  • A sense that something terrible will happen if you don't do X
  • Doubt-spirals about salvation

This Is Not a Moral Failing

The distress these thoughts cause is the opposite of evidence that they reflect who you are. People with scrupulosity are tormented by these thoughts precisely because their values are the opposite of what the thoughts suggest. The thoughts are not the truth about you.
