Social Control in Religion
The group-level dynamics of high-control religion.
Beyond individual abuse and harmful beliefs, religion can produce harm through the structure and dynamics of the community itself. High-control groups create environments where staying is rewarded, leaving is punished, and doubt is treated as a moral failure.
Common Patterns in High-Control Groups
- Obedience and conformity are emphasized as virtues
- Doubt is discouraged — often framed as a spiritual weakness or attack
- Outside information is treated as dangerous — limited exposure to books, media, friendships outside the group
- Exit is loaded with fear — leaving the group threatens your soul, your relationships, your community, your identity
- Insider language creates a sense of separateness from the outside world
- Authority is centralized in leaders whose interpretations are not to be questioned
A fuller guide is in development

Naming the dynamics is often the first step out.
If you're starting to see your own community through new eyes, that's worth talking about.
